z1 Theft Alarm Query

  • My Z1 came equipped with a Einbauanleitung 7049 theft alarm. I had some difficulties with it, so I attempted to remove it. I disconnected the main connector, which seemed to disable the unit.

However, the car would not start.

This vehicle also had a flashing red light on the dashboard just to the left of the slider controls for the heater. This light did not flash after the car was started. I'm sure that this light is some indication of an additional theft protection that this car is equipped with.

To get the car to start with the Einbauanleitung 7049 theft control disconnected, I used a small rectangular ( 1cm X 1.5 cm X 5.5 cm ) black plastic device that was provided by the previous owner. I had never used this device before today. With this black plastic device, I touched it to the flashing red light on the dashboard.

The flashing red light stopped and the car started!

This flashing red light is clearly an additional theft deterrent system. I don't know why I did not have to touch the red light before.

Can someone tell me what this additional theft detection system is?

These systems are uncommon in the US.

  • These systems are also used in the US but I think You only know it combination with your ignition key.

An immobilizer has been used in more and more countries since around 1990 and when it was built-in at the factory - the key to deactivate it is in Your ignition key and the antenna is in the ignition lock.

In older expensive cars without immobilizer often the insurances demand to install an additional immobilizer and this is the device with the flashing light.

When You did not use that device before, it is possible, that the immobilizer was combined and deactivated by the anti theft alarm.

To dismantle this immobilizer without a instruction manual is not a good idea because it stops more than one system in the car.

Das BMW Cabrio ist eines jener sachlichen Transportmittel, das grundsätzlich offen, vollgetankt und mit dem Schlüssel im Zündschloß in der Garage stehen muß - für alle dringenden Fälle.

  • I have an instruction manual for the system I disabled.

I don't have a manual for the one that still remains. And I have no idea what it is.

  • And I have no idea what it is.

    Is my english so bad?

I wrote it in my post.

It is an immobilizer system which is a genuine BMW part.

You can not start the car because 3 different systems (ignition, gasoline pump and AFAIK motor electronic) were blocked.

    You will get a PM

  • I didn't realize that the immobilizer was a BMW part.

  • Georg, you were right. Disconnecting the alarm module did have some unforeseen consequences. Everything seems to be working fine except for the radio and the clock. They work fine with the key on, but when the ignition is Off, they both loose power. The clock goes to 00:00 and the radio goes to "CODE". I need tofigure out how the radio and clock are integrated into this alarm system. Does anyone have a Z1 electrical schematic?

  • Stop - the link is wrong!

When You are searching according to the former post.

For the Z1 common wiring schematics You need the "Band 6". There is in chapter 1.8 (page 21 of 174)

For the Z1 motor wiring schematics You need the "Band 7". There is in chapter 2a.8 (page 28 of 234)

This can help You but I think You should use the installation instzructions of the anti theft system and the imobilizer to find the plugs, where the cables are includes and changed.

Attention: Here the E30 manuals are NOT helpfull, because of different plugs andf core colours.

As i wrote You on 12 of May - I can send You these instructions when You send me a mail adress via PN-system - they are to big for the internal system.

Das BMW Cabrio ist eines jener sachlichen Transportmittel, das grundsätzlich offen, vollgetankt und mit dem Schlüssel im Zündschloß in der Garage stehen muß - für alle dringenden Fälle.

  • You are early in the morning - it looks as if You are in nearly the same time-zone as my colleagues in Tonawanda ;)

In my evening I will send You some information.

  • Now that I understand the added on electronics on this Z!, I have decided to leave them alone. Disconnection them seems more trouble than it's worth.
